The Certification Process

The Certification Process

Pursuing the CMI/CCIP Professional Designation - a Mark of Distinction in Taxation

Upon completion of the CMI/CCIP eligibility requirements, you must submit an application for your respective discipline. When you submit your application, you will be given access to the study materials. The application will then be reviewed by the IPT staff, with final review/approval completed by the CMI/CCIP Committee. After review, you will be notified of your eligibility status. If you are deemed eligible to sit for the CMI/CCIP exams, you will receive additional correspondence on exam registration within 6-8 weeks of the upcoming exam date. After taking the CMI/CCIP exams, you will be notified of your results within one week. New designees will receive a CMI/CCIP certificate, a lapel pin and lanyard, as well as information on the continuing education needed to maintain the designation. Candidates who do not pass the exams will receive a standardized review of categories where further improvement is needed.

If you have questions or need additional information regarding the certification process, please contact Jake Lipps, IPT’s Certification Manager.

Dates and Deadlines

Check below for CMI and CCIP exam dates and application deadlines.

The Application Deadline is the final date that an IPT member can submit an application for CMI/CCIP candidacy, with the intention of the sitting at the subsequent exam. For example, if an IPT member intends to sit for the CMI exams in June 2024, they would need to submit an application by March 21, 2024. The application deadline is typically 90 days prior to the exam date – applications received after this date will NOT be reviewed in time for the subsequent exams.

The Eligibility Deadline is the date in which CMI/CCIP candidates need to have all eligibility requirements completed and verified. This is a hard deadline but exceptions will be made with regards to certain IPT schools and the subsequent exam dates that follow.

The Registration Deadline is the final date that an eligible CMI /CCIP candidate can register for the subsequent exam. For example, the registration deadline for the June 2024 exams is May 22, 2024. The registration deadline is a hard deadline and is typically 30 days prior to the exam date – exam registrations made after this deadline are not permitted.

Questions?

We've Got Answers

Who may apply for CMI or CCIP candidacy?
Any active Member of the Institute in good standing is eligible to apply for CMI or CCIP professional designation candidacy.
Can I test out of the IPT schools?
See the Competency Exam Policy for details on which schools may be eligible. If you successfully complete a competency exam to place out of a school, it will not be accepted in lieu of attendance for the school. It will only meet the prerequisite to attend the next school.
What IPT schools and programs will I be required to complete?
Click on the appropriate Eligibility Checklist above for detailed information regarding the requirements to become an eligible candidate, including the required IPT Schools and Programs.
What if my application is reviewed and I do not meet the eligibility requirements?
You may submit additional documentation to supplement your original application. In order to update your eligibility status, you must submit documentation to IPT as you subsequently attend IPT programs. IPT program attendance is NOT automatically linked to the CMI/CCIP applications.
If I need to attend one more program to meet the requirements, can I take the exam and then attend the program at the same time (i.e. take the exam in June & then attend the IPT Annual Conference to fulfill the education requirements)?
No, all requirements must be met 45 days prior to the exam. The only exception to this policy is if a candidate has met all requirements, including submission of an application, with the exception of successful completion of a required IPT School. For example, Sales Tax School II concludes 25 days prior to the June Exams. The candidate has applied, met all other eligibility requirements, and is registered to attend Sales Tax School II. They will be eligible to sit for the June exams, pending their successful completion of Sales Tax School II. If you have any questions on this policy, please contact the IPT office.

Please note, regardless of when IPT Schools are scheduled, you MUST submit a CMI/CCIP application 90 days prior to the exam date. See the Exam Dates & Application Deadlines for full details.
If I submit an application and miss the next examination opportunity, must I reapply and pay again?
No, you do not need to reapply. An IPT member’s CMI/CCIP candidacy period is active for three years, upon submission of the application fee. There is also a fee for each exam administration for which a candidate registers. However, if you do not successfully complete all requirements for the designation within the initial candidacy period, you must reapply and take both the written and oral portions of the CMI or CCIP examination. In addition, you must meet all the requirements in effect at the time of application.
